Always be ready. Affordable birth control

Norethindrone is a progestin-only hormonal birth control prescription medicine. The mini pill is a great alternative for women who cannot take an estrogen-based hormone or a combination pill that contains both progestin and estrogen.

Progestin-only Pill (POP) vs Combined Oral Contraceptive (COC)

Norethindrone belongs to a class of oral contraceptives referred to as Progestin-Only Pill (POP). A birth control pill that includes estrogen and progestin is referred to as a Combined Oral Contraceptive (COC).

Norethindrone (POP) mini pill is preferred for women:

  • Over age 35
  • Who smoke cigarettes
  • Have tried the combination pill and experienced side-effects

POPs are considered safe for women who have:

  • High risk for heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • History of blood clots
  • Migraines with aura

Norethindrone may also be prescribed to treat:

  • Endometriosis
  • Menstrual migraines
  • Excess uterine bleeding
  • To suppress overgrowth of the uterine lining in women on estrogen replacement therapy and have an intact uterus
  • Reduce pain during menstruation (dysmenorrhea)

Q: How does Norethindrone work?

A: Progestin is a synthetic pro-gestational hormone that behaves similarly to progesterone. It is an isolated progestin and does not contain all of the properties of progesterone. In its isolated form, it is a strong inhibitor of ovulation and has weak estrogen and androgen properties. The mini-pill releases a small amount of progestin every day of the month.

Q: What can I expect when taking Norethindrone?

A: Women may experience less frequent periods.

Q: How do I take Norethindrone?

A: Norethindrone is an oral medication taken once daily for 28 consecutive days. It is recommended to take the pill at the same time each day.

Norethindrone is a type of birth control pill belonging to the parent drug class progesterone hormones. When taken properly Norethindrone prevents pregnancy. Common brand names are Aygestin, Camila, Errin, Jolivette, Lyza, Nora-BE, and Ortho Micronor. Norethindrone is the active ingredient in the brand name birth control pills and is the FDA-approved generic.
